Actioning UNDRIP, what is it? why does it matter?
Actioning UNDRIP, what? why? how? with Ginger Gosnell-Myers and Ta7talíya Michelle Nahanee
This hour-long interactive introduction is hosted on the shared territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples to:
- Provide an overview of what UNDRIP is
- Share examples of actioning & implementation of UNDRIP
- Explore possibilities and barriers to actioning UNDRIP
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday, 13 September 2007, by a majority of 144 states in favour, 4 votes against (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States) and 11 abstentions (Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burundi, Colombia, Georgia, Kenya, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Samoa and Ukraine). In May 2016, Canada officially removed its objector status to UNDRIP, almost a decade after it was adopted by the General Assembly. By 2016, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States of America, who had also voted against the Declaration, had reversed their positions and expressed support. Since then, commitments to honour & implement the declaration’s 46 articles have been made by municipalities, school boards, provincial & federal governments. What’s happening now? And, why does it matter?
